Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater

One of the latest stories that went into our Reading Folder was Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater.  During class the children identified the characters and the setting of the Nursery Rhyme.  The children brainstormed now they could acted out the story.  They worked in teams to make the scenery and took it upon themselves to set the stage for their production.  The following Smilebox highlights their hard work.

Family Monsters

I have enjoyed seeing all the Family Monsters the children brought in.  Everyone was so excited to share their monsters with their friends.  I can tell that you all put a lot of thought and work into creating your family monsters.  Great teamwork everyone!

Besides the family monsters you will see the the children enjoyed being the illustrators of the green monster from the book Go Away Big Green Monster. They were busy creating their visual representations of the green monster at the art center,  the paint easel, and electronically on the tablet.

Fire Safety

Here are the Smileboxes from our Fire Safety unit.  We enjoyed our visits from Mrs. Dysinger and the Creston Fire Department.  They gave the students a lot of good information about fire safety.

A Visit from Dr. Bonezzi

We were very exited to have a visit from Dr. Bonezzi this past Wednesday.  Dr. Bonezzi talked to us about Jerry the Germ and how he and his friends like to party in our bodies.  Dr. Bonezzi talked about how we should cough and sneeze into our sleeves or a tissue, wash our hands, eat good healthy foods and get plenty of rest to keep our bodies strong.  Thank you Dr. Bonezzi!

The Quirkles

Who are the Quirkles?

The Quirkles® are 26 imaginary scientists that help children everyday develop a love and appreciation for science. They offer a way to integrate literacy and science.  The Quirkles® create enthusiasm and excitement for reading and science through whimsical illustrations, alliteration of the specified letter, and fun hands-on science.

The Quirkles

Who is meeting the Quirkles?

We are!  We are meeting the Quirkle that is the same letter as our Person of the Week.  That means that we have already meet:

Colorful Caroline – Caroline helps her friends, Calvin Cricket and Cathy Cottontail, learn about primary and secondary colors while using predominately words that begin with the hard C sound. This is a story about friendship as well as a science lesson about colors.

On Wednesday we will meet Ollie Oxygen. Ollie teaches his friends, Oz Otter, Oscar Ox, and Otto Ostrich, about oxygen in a story written predominately in words with the initial short vowel O. Discover what happens when Oz Otter, Oscar Ox, and Otto Ostrich find themselves surrounded by a fire in the forest. Ollie explains to his friends how oxygen makes fire bigger, while carbon dioxide extinguishes fire.

Below you can view the Smileboxes of our Colorful Caroline Experiments.

Learning with Apples

Our drama play area has been turned into a replica of Bauman Orchard.  The children have apples, pumpkins, gourds, and fall books to purchase.  Our sensory table is our classroom version of the fun straw maze and our hermit crab is the animal.  The children have been having a lot of fun playing in this area.

In the following Smileboxes you will also see what else we did centered around apples.  During Circle Time we made a big apple graph on our carpet.  During Free Choice Time we made applesauce.  While this was going on the children were busy inputting their data electronically on our Mimio board as to what color apple they brought to school.  They also were responsible for making a hard copy of their data.  When they were done we analyze and interpreted their data.  We did this same graphing procedure when we had our apple tasting activity.  Below you can look over the graphs with your child and ask them to interpret the data for you.  Have your child click on the graphs to maximize them.
