Snow Day

botanist bert

Well today was another Snow Day for us.  Mrs. Rupp and I spent the day working on SUTQ (Step Up to Quality)paperwork.  SUTQ is the new rating system that all preschools and daycares in Ohio will using starting next year.  I did get a chance to take a picture of our Botanist Bert experiment we conducted yesterday.  I hope the carnations last till next Monday.  Have a great weekend.

Snowball Fight!

Snow Day!  When we get back to school on Monday we are going to have a snowball fight in our room!  Maybe you would like to have one with your child this weekend.  Read below to find out how to have one and give it a try!

What You Will Need:

  • Scrap White Paper (8-1/2 x 11 paper makes perfect sized “snowballs”)
  • Baskets or containers to hold snowballs
  • 4 or more players (can be played with less people, but is definitely more fun with more people)
  • Safe, open play area in your home
  • Timer
  • Masking Tape

What You Do:

  • Write the letters of the alphabet on the paper.
  • Make the  “snowballs” by crumpling white sheets of paper into a ball. Place “snowballs” in a basket until ready to use.
  • Once everyone has made as many “snowballs” as desired, let the Snowball Fight begin!

How to Play:

  • Put a long piece of masking tape down on the safe open play area dividing the area into half.
  • Put a basket(s) of snowballs on each side of the tape.
  • Divide the players into 2 teams and stand on each side of the tape.
  • Set the timer for 1 minute.
  • Start throwing snowballs and continue throwing them until the timer goes off.
  • Once the timer goes off stop throwing the snowballs.  Now pick up the snowballs one at a time and open it up and state what letter is written on the snowball.
  • Once the letter has been identified crumble it back up and place it back in the basket and get ready for another snowball fight!

Variations:

  • State the letter name and the sound it makes.

Alphabet Songs

The children love to sing different Alphabet Songs.  Language Arts preschool standards states that by the end of preschool students should be able to:

*With modeling and support, recognize and name some upper and lower case letters in addition to those in first name.

*With modeling and support, recognize the sounds associated with letters.

*With modeling and support, demonstrate understanding that alphabet letters are a special category of symbols that can be named and identified.

These songs help the students work towards meeting these goals.  Singing and moving helps the children to learn the letters and their sounds.

Counting Songs

Here are some counting songs that the children enjoy singing too.  Math preschool standards states that by the end of preschool students should be able to:

*Count to 20 by ones with increasing accuracy. (rote count)

*Identify and name numerals 1-9
